20. If you have 5 nickels, that’s $0.25. 10 nickels is $0.50. 15 nickels is $0.75, and so on.
It’s easy to remember if you think of it this way: 5 x 4 = 20. So if you have 4 dimes, that’s the same as having a nickel (4 quarters). And 8 quarters is the same as 2 dollars (8 x 25 cents). So if you have 2 dollars, that’s the same as having 8 quarters.
It’s easy to remember if you think of it this way: 10 nickels is the same as having 2 dollars (10 x 5 cents). So if you have 2 dollars, that’s the same as having 10 nickels. 15 nickels is the same as having 3 dollars (15 x 5 cents), and so on.
You can use this method to figure out how much money you have, no matter how many coins you have. All you need to do is multiply the number of coins by the value of each coin. So if you have 3 quarters, 2 dimes, and 4 nickels, you would do this:
3 quarters x 25 cents = 75 cents
2 dimes x 10 cents = 20 cents
4 nickels x 5 cents = 20 cents
75 + 20 + 20 = $1.15
