Her ancestors came from the Grenadines, specifically Carriacou. She went to Erasmus Hall High School and subsequently attended the Juilliard School.

As a teenager, Stanis entered Miss Black America contests and was later named Miss Brooklyn, to which she came in second in the Miss New York state pageant.

The couple had their daughter Dior Ravel in April 1982. Stanis and Redd divorced after they married.
